Fees, sales tax and who pays them

See what Ticket-Worx charges (nothing on free tickets), choose whether buyers or you cover the platform and card fees, set sales tax, and add your own fees.

Who can do this: Owners and admins can change company fee settings. Managers can also add fees to a single event.

Part 1See what you are charged

  1. 1Click Settings in the sidebar.
  2. 2Look at the bottom of the Getting paid section.
  3. 3Read Platform fee. This is what Ticket-Worx charges, for example $1.50 / ticket.
  4. 4Read Card processing. This is the card rate, for example 2.90% + $0.30 per order.

Ticket-Worx sets these rates. You cannot edit them yourself. Stripe takes its actual card fee from your Stripe balance on each sale.

Part 2Choose who pays the platform and card fees

New accounts start with both fees passed on to the buyer.

  1. 1Click Settings in the sidebar and scroll to Fee pass-through and tax.
  2. 2Check Pass the platform fee on to the buyer to add it to the buyer's total. Uncheck it and the fee comes out of your payout instead.
  3. 3Check Pass credit card processing on to the buyer to add the card fee to the buyer's total. Uncheck it and the card fee comes out of your payout.
  4. 4Click Save fee settings.

Worked example: 2 tickets at $25.00, with a platform fee of $1.50 per ticket and card processing of 2.90% + $0.30. With both boxes checked, the buyer pays $50.00 for tickets, a $3.00 Service fee and $1.89 Card processing, for a total of $54.89. You keep the full $50.00. With both boxes unchecked, the buyer pays $50.00 and you keep $45.25, after the $3.00 platform fee and $1.75 card fee. The passed-on card fee is a little higher because the card company also charges its percentage on the fee itself.

Part 3Set your sales tax

  1. 1Click Settings in the sidebar and scroll to Fee pass-through and tax.
  2. 2Type the name buyers should see in Tax label, such as Sales Tax.
  3. 3Type your rate in Sales tax rate (%). Set it to 0 for no sales tax.
  4. 4Check Also apply sales tax to fees, not just the ticket price only if your state taxes fees too.
  5. 5Click Save fee settings.

Tax is added on top of the ticket price, after any discount code. You are responsible for collecting and paying any sales tax that applies to your tickets.

Part 4Add your own fees

These are fees you keep, such as a facility or service fee. Company fees apply to every event unless an event overrides them.

  1. 1Click Settings in the sidebar and scroll to Your own fees.
  2. 2Click Add a fee if the form is not already open.
  3. 3Type a Fee name buyers will understand, such as Facility fee.
  4. 4Choose How it is calculated: Flat amount per ticket, Flat amount per order, Percentage of ticket price, or Percentage + flat per ticket.
  5. 5Fill in Flat amount (USD), Percentage, or both, depending on your choice.
  6. 6Leave Pass this fee on to the buyer checked to add it on top of the price. Uncheck it and the fee is carved out of the ticket price instead.
  7. 7Check Sales tax applies to this fee if the fee should be taxed.
  8. 8Click Add fee. Click Remove beside a fee to delete it.

To use different fees for one event, open the event, find Fees, taxes and pass-through, and click Add a fee for this event. Event fees replace your company fees for that event. They do not stack, so a buyer is never charged both sets.

Part 5Check what a buyer will pay

  1. 1Click Events in the sidebar and open the event.
  2. 2Find the What a buyer pays box on the right. It shows a worked example for 2 of your first ticket type.
  3. 3Read Buyer total to see what the buyer is charged.
  4. 4Read Platform fee (yours) and Card processing to see the fees on that order.
  5. 5Read You net to see what you keep.

The box appears once the event has at least one ticket type.

Tips

  • Buyers see the platform fee as a line called Service fee at checkout.
  • Apparel and add-ons never carry the platform fee or your own ticket fees. They are still taxed if marked taxable, and card processing still applies.
  • Complimentary tickets from a comp code carry no fees at all.
  • Cash sales at the box office have no card processing fee. The platform fee on cash sales is tracked under Fees on cash sales in Settings.

If something goes wrong

A fee you added in Settings is not showing on one event.

That event has its own fees, which replace the company ones. Open the event, find Fees, taxes and pass-through, and add the fee there or remove the event fees.

You refunded a buyer but the platform fee did not come back.

This is expected. The platform fee is collected by Stripe on each sale, and refunding a buyer does not refund it.

Sales tax is not being added to a fee.

Two boxes must be checked: Also apply sales tax to fees, not just the ticket price under Fee pass-through and tax, and Sales tax applies to this fee on the fee itself. The fee must also be passed on to the buyer.

You see "Name the fee."

Type something in Fee name, then click Add fee again.
