Discount and comp codes
Create codes that take a percentage or dollar amount off, or make tickets free, and limit each code to a number of tickets.
Who can do this: Owners, admins and managers.
Before you start
- Create the event first. Codes belong to one event and do not work on your other events.
Part 1Add a discount code
- 1Click Events in the sidebar, then click the name of your event.
- 2Scroll to Discount and comp codes.
- 3Click Add a code. If the event has no codes yet, the form is already open.
- 4Choose Percentage off, Dollar amount off each ticket or Dollar amount off the whole order in Type.
- 5Enter the amount. A percentage must be from 1 to 100.
- 6Type the code in Code, using 3 to 32 letters, numbers or dashes. Leave it blank and Ticket-Worx makes one for you.
- 7Enter a number in Tickets available on this code to cap it. Leave it blank for unlimited.
- 8Pick a date in Last day it works if the code should expire. It works through the end of that day.
- 9Add a reminder in Note to yourself if you like, up to 120 characters. Buyers never see it.
- 10Click Add code.
Part 2Add a comp (free ticket) code
A comp code makes the tickets in the order free. It zeroes out the ticket price, any fees of your own, and the Ticket-Worx fee. With nothing left to charge, the guest pays nothing and is not asked for a card.
- 1Scroll to Discount and comp codes on the event page.
- 2Click Add a code.
- 3Choose Comp - free ticket, no fees in Type.
- 4Type a code in Code, or leave it blank to have one made.
- 5Enter how many free tickets you are giving away in Tickets available on this code.
- 6Click Add code.
- 7Send the code to your guests along with the link to your event page.
A comp code only covers tickets. If the guest adds apparel or another add-on, they still pay for that item.
Part 3Turn a code off or delete it
- 1Find the code in the table under Discount and comp codes.
- 2Click Turn off to stop it from working. The row fades and shows an Off badge.
- 3Click Turn on to bring it back.
- 4Click Delete to remove a code for good. Delete only shows on codes that have never been used.
Part 4How buyers enter a code
- 1The buyer opens your event page and chooses at least one ticket.
- 2The buyer types the code in the Promo code box below the tickets.
- 3The buyer clicks Apply.
- 4The order summary shows a Discount line, or a Complimentary line for a comp code, with the code name beside it.
Codes are not case sensitive. SPONSOR10 and sponsor10 are the same code.
Part 5Buy one, get one offers
An offer needs no code. Buyers add both tickets to their order and the deal applies by itself, for example buy one adult, get one child free, or buy two, get one half price.
- 1Open the event and scroll to Buy one, get one offers.
- 2Set what they Buy (how many, and which ticket type) and what they Get (how many, and which type). The two can be the same type: buy 2 Adult, get 1 Adult free.
- 3Choose Free, A percentage off each one or A dollar amount off each one.
- 4Optionally cap how many times it applies per order, and give it an end date.
- 5Press Add offer. It shows on your event page straight away, and in the order summary as buyers add tickets.
- 6Turn an offer off any time. One that has been used can be turned off but not deleted, because orders point at it.
Tickets an offer makes free are real tickets: they take inventory, scan at the door and count in reports. Ticket-Worx charges no fee on a ticket that costs the buyer nothing, whether it is a $0 ticket type, a comp, or one an offer made free.
Tips
- The limit is counted in tickets, not orders. A limit of 10 means ten tickets in total, however many people use the code. The Tickets used column shows progress, and a Used up badge appears at the limit.
- Always set Tickets available on this code on a comp code. Without a limit, anyone who learns the code can take free tickets.
- A discount can never be more than the ticket value, so an order cannot go below zero. Discounts come off tickets only, not add-ons.
- When someone starts checkout with a limited code, their tickets are held against the limit for 20 minutes so two people cannot both claim the last one.
If something goes wrong
A buyer sees "That promo code is not valid."
The code is misspelled, turned off, past its Last day it works, or belongs to a different event. Check the code in the table on this event's page.
A buyer sees "That code has been fully used" or "That code only has 2 tickets left."
The code has hit its ticket limit, or the buyer wants more tickets than remain on it. The buyer can lower the quantity or remove the code. To give out more, add a new code, since an existing code cannot be edited.
You see "The code SPONSOR10 already exists for this event."
Each code must be unique within the event. Pick a different code, or turn the old one back on.
You see "This code has been used, so it can be turned off but not deleted."
Orders are linked to the code, so it stays on record. Click Turn off to stop it from working.
