Opening and closing sales, and purchase limits

Control when buyers can purchase with the event status, and limit how many tickets one order can hold.

Who can do this: Owners, admins and managers.

Part 1Open and close online sales

Online sales are opened and closed by hand with the button at the top right of the event page. There are no fields for scheduling a sales start or end date, for the event or for a single ticket type.

  1. 1Click Events in the sidebar, then click the name of your event.
  2. 2Click Publish event at the top right to open sales on a draft event.
  3. 3Click Close sales at the top right when you want online sales to stop.
  4. 4Click Reopen sales if you want to start selling again.

While sales are closed your event page stays up. In place of the ticket list, visitors see Tickets are not on sale and "Sales for this event have closed."

Part 2Limit tickets per order for the whole event

  1. 1Open your event from Events in the sidebar.
  2. 2Find Max tickets per order in the Event details card.
  3. 3Enter a number from 1 to 100. This is the most tickets, of all types added together, in one order.
  4. 4Click Save changes.

A buyer who tries to go over sees "You can book at most 10 tickets in one order" with your number in place of 10.

Part 3Limit one ticket type per order

Per-ticket limits are set when you add the ticket type.

  1. 1Scroll to Ticket types on the event page.
  2. 2Click Add ticket type.
  3. 3Set Min per order to the fewest a buyer must take, from 1 to 100.
  4. 4Set Max per order to the most a buyer may take, from 1 to 100.
  5. 5Fill in the rest of the form and click Add ticket type.

Tips

  • Closing online sales does not stop your box office. Staff can keep selling in person on an event with sales closed, and box office sales are not held to the per-order limits. Only the quantity available still applies.
  • The Status list in Event details does the same job as the top right button. Sales closed - page visible matches Close sales, and Published - on sale matches Reopen sales.
  • To stop selling one ticket type on a set date, put a date on your calendar and close sales by hand, or set a Quantity available so it sells out by itself.

If something goes wrong

A buyer sees "Tickets for this event are not on sale."

The event is not published. Open the event and click Publish event or Reopen sales at the top right.

A buyer sees a ticket is "limited to 4 per order" or "has a minimum of 2 per order."

These come from Max per order and Min per order on that ticket type. The buyer can place a second order for more, up to your limits each time.

A buyer sees "Only 3 left" or that a ticket "is sold out."

The ticket type has reached its Quantity available. Tickets held in a checkout that was never paid are released by themselves after a short time, so a few may come back.

A buyer sees "This event allows at most 10 tickets per order."

The order is over your Max tickets per order. Raise the number in Event details and click Save changes, or ask the buyer to split the purchase into two orders.
