Scan without a signal
The door scanner keeps working when the connection drops: scans are saved on the phone and sent when the signal comes back.
Who can do this: Anyone scanning, on a paired door phone or signed in to the Door page.
Before you start
- Open the scanner once while the phone has a connection. That is when the ticket list downloads.
Part 1Get the phone ready while you have signal
- 1Open the scanner on the phone before doors, somewhere with good signal or Wi-Fi.
- 2Wait for the status line under the counter to read Online · tickets saved for offline use.
- 3Keep the scanner tab open. Do not close the browser.
- 4Walk to your gate. If the signal drops on the way, the phone is ready.
While online, the phone refreshes its ticket list and sends any waiting scans about every 45 seconds, so late sales keep arriving.
Part 2Scan while offline
With no connection, the phone checks each ticket against its own saved list, using the same rules as always. It will not admit the same ticket twice itself.
- 1Scan as normal. Results, colors and sounds are the same.
- 2Watch the status line. It reads Offline · scanning from this device, followed by how many scans are waiting to send.
- 3Use Check All Tickets In and typed codes as normal. They work offline too.
- 4Carry on. Nothing needs doing while the phone is offline.
Upgrading tickets needs a connection, and so does selling at the box office.
Part 3Send the saved scans
- 1Get the phone back into signal with the scanner open. Saved scans are sent by themselves as soon as the connection returns.
- 2Tap Sync now on the status line to send them right away.
- 3Check that the status line returns to Online · tickets saved for offline use with no scans waiting.
- 4Do this for every phone before you close up. The check-in report is only complete once every phone has sent its scans.
Each scan is recorded with the time it really happened, not the time it was sent.
Part 4When two offline phones admit the same ticket
Two gates with no signal cannot see each other's scans, so a copied ticket could get in once at each gate. When the second phone reconnects, the server spots it.
- 1Look for the amber box titled Checked in twice while offline.
- 2Read the ticket codes listed. Each one was admitted on this phone after another gate had already let it in.
- 3Have a word with the other gate if it keeps happening.
- 4Tap Dismiss to clear the box.
The first scan to reach the server counts as the real check-in. The second is kept on record as a duplicate.
Tips
- Do not clear the browser's data or history during the event, and do not use a private or incognito window. The saved tickets and waiting scans live in the browser, and clearing it deletes them.
- Saved scans survive a locked screen, a closed tab and a dead battery. They are only sent while the scanner is open, so reopen it once you are back in signal.
- Tickets sold after the phone's last refresh are not on it yet. While offline they show Not found. Send those buyers to a gate with signal, or look them up once you reconnect.
- If signal is patchy, give at least one gate a Wi-Fi hotspot, so there is always one phone that sees live data.
If something goes wrong
The status line says Offline · no copy of the tickets on this device yet, or a scan shows No connection, and this device has no copy of the tickets yet.
This phone never finished downloading the ticket list. Move to where it has a connection and wait for Online · tickets saved for offline use. After that it works offline.
Opening the scanner with no signal shows a page that just says No connection.
The scanner had not been opened on this phone while online. Open it once with a connection and it will open offline after that.
The number of scans waiting to send does not go down.
The phone still cannot reach the server. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, then tap Sync now. The scans stay safe on the phone until they are sent.
A valid ticket bought minutes ago shows Not found while offline.
It was sold after this phone last refreshed. Get a connection, tap Sync now, and scan it again.
